An update from Little Zebra Books Director, David Ker

In Mozambique, June 1 is “Children’s Day”. So Ilda threw a party for the kids in her neighborhood. Ilda has been using Little Zebra Books for many years. But recently she moved to a new part of her city. It is far out on the outskirts of town. She told me it is easy to get there because it is the last stop on the taxi route. She is so far from the city that there is no running water where she lives. Instead she has to go into town to get water and bring it home in bottles.

In this remote location, Ilda found many children waiting for her. Many of them aren’t in school and don’t have access to the things we take for granted. She is doing something about that. She has applied to the local government office to start a new community reading center. Her dream is to have a library and storage facility for Little Zebra Books. But she’s not waiting around until then. Already she is known in her community as “the lady with the books” and kids are lining up at her door for books.

On Children’s Day, Ilda hung balloons from the big baobab tree near her house and made a big pot of rice and beans. Then she invited children to enjoy a meal, sing songs, and hear a story. This reminds me of the verse in James that says let the person of “humble circumstances glory in their high position.” I think Ilda realizes what a high calling she has to minister to these kids.

Your support of Little Zebra Books helps us provide books (and sometimes rice and beans) for many children in Africa. What a great honor it is for us to play a small part in what Ilda is doing.
